Book Review: The House of Naad By Ananya Pandey “Tinka”

Some stories are not loud, but they stay in our hearts for a long time. The House of Naad: A Journey Through Music and Generations by Ananya Pandey “Tinka” feels like one of those stories. It is a warm and emotional fictional novella about family, memories, music, tradition, and finding our roots.

The story follows Dhvani, the main character, as she returns to her ancestral home. At first, it may look like she is simply returning to an old family house. But slowly, the house begins to open the door to a much bigger story.

It holds memories. It holds forgotten diaries. It holds old melodies. And most importantly, it holds the musical journey of many generations of her family. As Dhvani starts exploring the house, she learns about her family’s deep connection with Hindustani classical music. The music is not just something her family enjoyed. It was a part of their lives. It was connected with their discipline, emotions, relationships, struggles, and identity.

This is where I found the story very beautiful. Usually, when we hear the word inheritance, we think about money, property, jewellery, or land. But The House of Naad gives inheritance a completely different meaning.

Dhvani discovers that the most valuable thing her family has left behind cannot be counted in money. It is their tradition. It is their music. It is their devotion. And it is the knowledge and love passed from one generation to another. The forgotten diaries also add an emotional touch to the story. An old diary can sometimes tell us things that people were never able to say directly. Through written words, memories can come alive again. For Dhvani, these discoveries help her understand the people who lived before her.

She is not only learning about their music. She is also learning about their lives. Another beautiful part of the book is the idea of Naad Naad can be understood here as more than just sound. It becomes a symbol of something that continues to travel through time. A person may leave this world, but the music they loved can remain. Someone from the next generation can sing the same melody and suddenly the past feels alive again. That thought gives the story a very peaceful feeling. The ancestral house itself almost feels like another character in the book. Its rooms are filled with history. Its silence seems to carry old sounds. Every diary and melody gives Dhvani another piece of her family’s story.

Slowly, the house becomes more than an old building. It becomes a home of memories.I also liked that the story shows the importance of discipline in music. Classical music is not only about having a beautiful voice or natural talent. It requires patience, regular practice, respect for the art, and years of learning. This makes the musical legacy of Dhvani’s family even more meaningful. Their inheritance was not created in one day. It was built through years of love and dedication. The book also made me think about our own families. Sometimes we become so busy with modern life that we know very little about the people who came before us. We may know their names, but not their dreams. We may live in the house they built, but not know their struggles.

Stories like The House of Naad remind us to ask questions . What did our grandparents love? What did they struggle for? What traditions did they follow? What did they want the next generation to remember?

These questions can help us understand our own identity. Dhvani’s journey is therefore not only about discovering her family’s past. In a way, it is also about discovering herself. The more she learns about the generations before her, the more she understands the meaning of what has been passed down to her. That makes her journey emotional as well as personal.

Another thing I liked is that music connects the past and present without needing many words. A melody can bring back a memory in seconds. A familiar tune can remind us of a person we miss. A song can carry feelings that are difficult to explain. This emotional power of music is at the heart of the story. The title The House of Naad also feels very suitable. The house is not simply filled with objects from the past. It is filled with sounds, memories, traditions, and emotions that continue to echo. Overall, The House of Naad is a gentle and heartfelt fictional story. It can be a lovely read for people who enjoy family stories, Indian culture, music, emotional journeys, ancestral memories, and stories about different generations. It does not need a huge adventure to become meaningful. Its beauty comes from small discoveries and the emotions connected with them.

For me, the most beautiful message of the story is simple: What our family leaves us is not always something we can hold in our hands.

Sometimes our greatest inheritance is a song. Sometimes it is a tradition. Sometimes it is a lesson. Sometimes it is a memory. And sometimes it is a sound that continues to live long after the person who created it is gone. The House of Naad reminds us that houses may grow old and generations may change, but some things continue to live. Music remembers. And through Dhvani’s journey, we see how one old house, a few forgotten diaries, and timeless melodies can bring an entire family legacy back to life.
